"As someone who takes car seat safety very seriously, I jumped at the opportunity I had to receive a car seat installation service with Dr. Maria Gonzalez, from My Car Seat Install. I have two children who were ages 5.5 years old and 15 months at the time of my service. My 5.5-year old was in a forward facing 5-point harness seat, and my 15-month old was in a rear facing infant seat.
I'd read the seat manuals and had what I thought was a very secure install on both seats. But during my appointment, Maria discovered a major issue with one of my seats. Because my son had recently surpassed the weight limit for the lower anchors on his seat, I'd installed it with the rear passenger seatbelt so that I could keep him in the 5-point harness as long as possible. The problem was that in the particular make, model, and year of our van, the locking latch plate mechanism on the seat belt was rendered ineffective due to the angle of the belt once it was threaded through the belt path. Meaning that may not have functioned properly in the event of a crash.
Though this was pretty shocking to discover, she took as much time as necessary to think through and help me resolve the problem, showing me how to install the seat safely with the use of a locking clip. She also shared several educational resources and materials and made personalized recommendations for car seats that would be simpler to install in our van.
I never would have known about this issue had she not taken the time to thoroughly check the seat belts and car seat installations in my van that day. I now have the peace of mind knowing that my children's seats are correctly installed in our vehicle and that they are riding safely on the road.
